Council receives $1,000,000 grant for new amenities at Byron Bay’s Apex Park

Byron Shire Council’s plans for the upgrade of the Byron Bay foreshore have received a boost from the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund with a $1 million grant for new accessible amenities in Apex Park.

Apex Park at Main Beach is one of the most highly used public areas in the Shire and the existing toilets do not meet demand.

As part of the approved plans for the improvement of the area, Council will remove the existing toilets and build new amenities and change rooms at the back of the existing Byron Bay Surf Club building.

The design includes:

13 toilets (a mix of gendered and all-gender toilets) a family room and accessible facilities

Three change rooms.

“This will make better use of the space and will open up the foreshore area with views to the ocean, Nuthungulli and the lighthouse at Walgun Cape Byron,” Jim Roberts, Acting Manager Open Spaces and Facilities.

Construction is expected to start in mid-2027.

The Crown Reserves Improvement Fund is designed to support land managers, like Byron Shire Council, maintain and improve public reserves in NSW.

“These projects are about making sure Crown land continues to deliver for communities, whether that’s through better facilities, safer access or protecting the natural environment people rely on,” NSW Minister for Lands and Property, Steve Kampner, said.

“Crown reserves are part of the fabric of towns and regions across NSW, supporting community life, recreation and local economies.

“By investing in these projects and opening a new funding round, we are continuing to support communities to care for and improve the places they rely on every day,” Minister Kampner said.
