Community Feedback Invited on Milestone Bangalow Flood Study
The community of Bangalow is being urged to review and comment on a new draft flood study. This marks the first comprehensive, modern assessment of flood behaviour in the area. It utilizes current Australian and New South Wales modelling standards.
Advanced Technology Maps Risk
Consultants employed best-practice technology to map flooding from multiple water sources:
- Byron Creek [1]
- Paddys Creek [1]
- Maori Creek [1]
- Overland runoff (rain overwhelming local drainage networks) [1]
Engineers calibrated and validated the technical model using real-world data from major flood events in 2016, 2017, and 2022. Project Officer Nikki Bourke confirmed that the digital results closely matched historical records and community observations from those three events.
Key Flooding Hotspots Identified
The draft study identifies riverine flooding from Byron Creek and its tributaries as the primary risk to the township. The most vulnerable areas include:
- Deacon Street and Ashton Street [1]
- The industrial estate and Lismore Road [1]
- George Street and Market Street [1]
- The Raftons Road crossing at Paddys Creek [1]
Additionally, the study pinpoints five distinct overland flooding hotspots where intense rainfall routinely overwhelms local stormwater capacity.
Shaping Future Development
This study will serve as the foundation for an upcoming Floodplain Risk Management Plan. Local authorities will also use the data to guide future land-use planning and development decisions.
Following recent flash flooding in March 2026, Council is specifically asking residents to submit photos and personal accounts to further refine the data.
